On July 14, World Population Day is Observed around the World every year. The day is commemorated to raise awareness about the current scary scenario of growing global population and issues arising because of it.

Thomas Matthus who was an English Economist once said, “The power of the population is indefinitely greater than the power in the earth to produce subsistence for man.” Indeed the rate at which the world population is gradually growing is alarming as the resources for living are being used up at an unsustainable rate. Theme 2022: A WORLD OF 8 BILLION: TOWARDS A RESILIENT FUTURE FOR ALL – HARNESSING OPPORTUNITIES AND ENSURING RIGHTS AND CHOICES FOR ALL

The theme of World Population Day 2022 shows itself that the earth is going to be overpopulated with a huge number of 8 billion of population this year. According to the 2011 census the world population had reached 7 Billion. The theme is decided to invest in Human health and physical capital for a productive and inclusive society that uphold human and reproductive rights. Only in this way will we be able to tackle critical challenges that our planet is facing and can build up a world where health, dignity and education are rights and realities, not privileges. There should always be a space for prosperity in a world of 8 billion.

History Of World Population Day

World Population day was first observed on July 11, 1989 Under the United Nations Development Program. It was as a result of the generated interests of the “Day of 5 Billion”,celebrated on July 11,1987. The day is focused on the urgency and importance of Population issues.

Eventually the United Nations General Assembly approved world population day by the resolution 45/216 passed in December 1990. It was first marked on july 11, 1990 in more than 90 countries since then day is being celebrated by the country offices of United Nations Fund for Population activities (UNFPA) in partnership with government and Civil Societies. The basic motto is to enhance awareness of Population issues regarding its ill effects on environment and development.

1804 First Billion-The world population reaches 1 billion people.
1927 Second Billion-The world population doubles to 2 billion.
1960 Third Billion-The world population reaches 3 billion.
1989 A Holiday is Born-The United Nations recognizes July 11 as World Population.
2000 Sixth Billion-Just 40 years after it reached 3 billion, the population doubled to 6 billion.
2017 7.5 Billion-On this day, statistical models estimate that the world population is at 7.5 billion.

The Series of Growth In World Population

Today the population explosion is a very serious concern worldwide as it’s a reason for various issues that are adversely affecting the nature and environment around us. As per the data it took hundreds of thousands of years for the world population to grow to 1 billion – then in just another 200 years or so, it grew sevenfold.

The global population reached the 7 billion mark in 2011 and in 2021 it will reach 7.9 billion which is supposed to grow to 8.5 billion till 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050 and 10.9 in 2100. If this population explosion is not stopped soon then the day is not far when our earth will convert into a non-habitable planet.

  • The changes in fertility rates and life expectancy due to medical advancements is the main cause of increasing population. The global lifespan that used to be 64.6 years in the early 1990s has increased to 72.6 years by 2019.
  • The high level of Migration and accelerating urbanisation is another cause of population growth. By 2050 it is estimated that around 66% of the world population will be living in urban areas.
  • The major concern of Population explosion is universal access to health care, education, sanitation, water, shelter, food and energy. Which further creates a gap in economic development, income distribution, poverty and social protection.
  • The world population has grown more than tripled in size between the 1950s to 2020s.
  • The period of 1965 to 1970 was of highest growth in population when the human numbers were increasing by an average of 2.1% per year.
  • During the period from 2000 to 2020, while the world population was growing at an average rate of 1.2%, the population grew twice as fast in 33 countries of Africa & 12 of Asia.
  • Nigeria with an annual growth rate of 2.6% is one of the 10 fastest growing countries in the world population wise.
