What is Black Hole: Formation, Theory of Relativity, Sagittarius A* And 8 Facts About Black Holes

The Universe and its celestial bodies including black holes have always been so fascinating to us. Recently with the revelation of the first image of the supermassive black object at the center of our own Galaxy; the Milky Way, speculations have finally turned into evidence of it being a black hole. The Global research team, Event Horizontal Telescope (EHT) Collaborations has given the confirmation of Sagittarius A* being a ring shaped black hole surrounded by a ring of gasses with dark Shadow in its origin.

1st Doughnut Shaped Blackhole in Our Galaxy: Sagittarius A*

A team of Astronomers from EHT Collaborations, has been observing Sagittarius A* for a long time by using 8 existing radio observatories across the world. What they initially found was stars rotating around something invisible, huge and compact at the center of the Milky Way. The following study finally confirmed that this invisible thing is a black hole having a doughnut shaped structure which coincides with the predictions of Einstein’s theory of General Relativity.

8 Interesting Facts About Black holes

Sagittarius A* is a complex radio source and home of supermassive black holes. It is about 27,000 light years away from the Earth and 17 times more massive than the Sun. This is the 1st captured central black hole of our own Galaxy and is 1000 times less massive than the previously found black hole named M87*.

What is Black Hole?

It is the most fascinating and powerful region in spacetime with great gravitational potential that does not allow any particle or light to escape from it. It is the dark invisible region that can be detected only by observing the unusual behavior of nearby visible bodies with the help of space Telescopes with special tools. We can’t see anything inside the Blackhole.

A black hole is formed with the death of a massive Star. Only the stars having more than 3 solar masses, become black holes at the end of their lives. At the time of collapse they exert an intense gravitational force that allows nothing to escape.

According to NASA, the first ever discovered black hole was Cygnus X-1, within the milky way in the constellation of Cygnus, the Swan in 1964. Studies from NASA suggest that around 10 million to a billion black holes may exist in our Galaxy.

Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity

In 1916, Albert Einstein for the first time predicted the existence of black holes, by explaining the General Theory of Relativity. In 1967, American astronomer John Wheeler coined the term, ‘Black Hole’.

The General Theory of Relativity in simple terms, is the theory of gravity. Gravity, being an invisible power, attracts objects to one another, it also curves or wraps the space around it. The more giant an object is, the more it wraps the space around it. The theory is the most beautiful explanation of the relation between Space and time in the world of Physics.

Anatomy of Black holes

The anatomy can be understood in 5 steps.

Singularity

The center of black hole, with infinite density, where all the matter and energy fall into the black hole finally ends up.

Event Horizon

The radius around the singularity, where matter and energy cannot escape the black hole’s gravity: the point of no return is called the Event horizon.

Photon Sphere

Though the black hole itself is dark, photons are emitted from nearby hot plasma in jets. Just outside the Event horizon, gravity is so strong that it bends down its path due to that we see a bright ring surrounding a roughly circular dark Shadow.

Relativistic Jets

When a black hole feeds on stars, the meal produces Jets of particles and radiation blasting out from the black hole’s poles at near light speed. Which further can extend to thousands of light years in space.

Accretion Disk

A region of superheated dust and gas, wheels around a black hole at immense speed. It produces electromagnetic radiation that helps to identify black hole’s location.

8 Interesting Facts about Black Holes

  1. In 2019, the first ever image of any black hole was captured of M87*.
  2. Karl Schwarzschild was first to come up with a term called Schwarzschild’s radius, a measurement of how small you have to compress any object to create a black hole.
  3. If the sun is replaced with an equal massed black hole, Earth will not be sucked, instead it will continue to orbit as it does around the sun.
  4. HR 6819 is the closest black hole, which is just 1,000 light years away from our planet.
  5. If you would fall into a black hole, the quantum effects would cause the event horizon to act much like a wall of fire, which would instantly burn you to death.
  6. Passing too close to a black hole, can cause a star to be torn apart.
  7. A black hole is a true hole in space. Anything that crosses its edge, is swallowed forever.
  8. As you get closer to black hole, the flow of time slows down.

NEET PG 2022 Schedule Update: IMA Urges Centre To Postpone NEET PG May Session

NEET PG 2022 Schedule Update: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has written to the Centre seeking postponement of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test or NEET PG 2022 session scheduled to be held on May 21, 2022 due to frequent delays and incompletion of the AIQ NEET PG 2021 counseling process making it difficult for NEET PG aspirants to prepare for the upcoming NEET PG 2022 examination.

IMA Urges Centre to Postpone NEET PG 2022 Session

Seeking immediate rescheduling of NEET PG 2022 May session, the medical association in a letter to the Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said, “Since the NEET PG 2022 examination date is 21st May 2022, we request your timely intervention and urgent consideration of postponement of the NEET PG 2022 for a reasonable period of time, so that, the current NEET-PG 2021 aspirants have adequate time to prepare and appear for the upcoming NEET-PG 2022 examination and the eligibility of all interns is also ensured.”

“We are sure that the issue shall be dealt with urgency by granting the prayer as made hereinabove in larger academic and societal interest as a whole,” the letter added.

NEET PG 2021 Counseling Delays

The urgency seeking postponement of NEET PG 2022 arises out of the frequent disruptions and delays in the NEET PG 2021 counseling process which is still underway, with several States yet to complete the counseling process for the NEET PG 2021 session.

It may be noted that the NEET PG 2021 examination was held 5 months after the scheduled date in the month of September 2021 with the counselling process scheduled to begin on October 25, 2021, which got deferred to January 2022 owing to a decision pending on seat reservations, and got further delayed owing to a Supreme Court ruling of 31st March 2022, which ordered the cancellation and conduction of Special Round of Counselling for the Mop-up round.

IMA Urges Centre to Postpone NEET PG 2022 Session

Given this, the NEET PG 2022 schedule was deferred from April 2022 to May 2022, so that the candidates could appear for the final stray vacancy round of NEET PG 2021 and can still have plenty of time for preparation and reappearance for the NEET PG 2022 examination if they failed to secure a seat. However, the AIQ Counselling process anticipated to be completed by the end of March 2022 got extended to the months of April-May 2022 causing a great degree of inconvenience for candidates preparing for NEET PG 2022 examination scheduled to be held on May 21, 2022.

Impact On Medical Graduates, Aspirants

The difference between NEET PG 2022 exam date and the completion of 2021 counseling is too short for an aspirant to prepare and appear for the approaching NEET PG examination which necessitates the deferral of the NEET PG 2022 examination schedule as it concerns career of lakhs of medical graduates.

Further another five to ten thousand interns, who served as COVID warriors during COVID-19 pandemic, are ineligible to appear for NEET-PG due to delay in the completion of their final examination, and consequently, their internship beyond eligibility criteria set for the examination also needs to be given an equitable opportunity along with the rest to the take up the NEET PG 2022 examination.

What Is NEET PG?

NEET PG is an eligibility-cum-ranking examination for admissions into the postgraduate programs such as MD/MS and PG Diploma courses across India as per Section (10) of the Indian Medical Council Act 1956. While, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) is entrusted with conducting the exam, and the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) will be conducting NEET PG medical counselling for allotting the 50 percent AIQ seats, 100% seats of Central Universities, and 100% seats of Deemed University with the States having their own counselling agencies to complete the NEET PG medical counselling process.
