It wouldn’t be wrong if call it a historic moment for the Indian Republic, as Draupadi Murmu, 64, the BJP-led NDA’s presidential candidate got elected as India’s first Tribal and 15th President of India in the recently concluded presidential elections.

Draupadi Murmu emerged victorious to become India’s first Tribal and 15th President of India after defeating the Opposition’s presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha, who conceded defeat after the third round of counting.

Congratulating President-elect Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a Twitter post said, “India scripts history. At a time when 1.3 billion Indians are marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a daughter of India hailing from a tribal community born in a remote part of eastern India has been elected our President! Congratulations to Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji on this feat.”

Opposition presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha too extended his best wishes to India’s first Tribal Women President. “I join my fellow citizens in congratulating Smt. Droupadi Murmu on her victory in the Presidential Election 2022. India hopes that as the 15th President of the Republic she functions as the Custodian of the Constitution without fear or favour,” Mr. Sinha tweeted.

Draupadi Murmu’s Initial Phase

Draupadi Murmu was born on June 20, 1958, in a Santali tribal family in Uparbeda village of Mayurbhanj district in the Indian state of Odisha.

She began her career as a school teacher before taking a plunge into State politics, and also worked as an Assistant Professor at the Shri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Institute, and Junior Assistant at the Irrigation Department in the Odisha government.

Draupadi Murmu’s Political Career

Draupadi Murmu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1997 and was elected as the councillor of the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat; later in 2000 She became the Chairperson of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat.

She served as MoS with Independent Charge for Commerce and Transportation, and later as MoS for Fisheries and Animal Resources Development in the BJP and BJD coalition in Odisha from 2000 to 2004.

On May 18, 2015, Draupadi Murmu took oath as the Governor of Jharkhand, thus becoming the first woman Governor of Jharkhand, and also the first female tribal leader from Odisha to be appointed as a Governor of an Indian state.

Come Presidential Elections 2022, Draupadi Murmu was chosen as NDA’s presidential candidate, which she won thus becoming the 15th President of India

With this election victory, Draupadi Murmu becomes the only second woman President of India, after Pratibha Patil who served as the 12th President of India.

Draupadi Murmu succeeds Ram Nath Kovind as the 15th President of India, and as the first Tribal President of India as well as the first Tribal Women President of India.
